Public Spaces

Studies from the University of Arizona estimate that each of us touches as many as 300 surfaces every 30 minutes and 1 out of 5 of the surfaces we touch most likely contain traces of body fluids and/or pathogens (e.g.: Avian Flu, MRSA, Swine Flu, bacteria, viruses and other “superbugs”). These are common surfaces in our lives -- doorknobs, countertops, handles, keyboards, etc. -- may be touched thousands of times a day, making them a clearing house for virus and bacteria.

The riskiest places being: Busses and other public transportation, restrooms (public and private), Shopping carts, escalator and safety rails, work surfaces (e.g.: keyboards, bank machine key pads…etc.) and Restaurant tables.

A recent study has shown that travelers using public transit have a 6 times greater risk of contracting respiratory infections. Dr. Charles Gerba’s (University of Arizona) analysis has shown the presence of dangerous bacteria including the “super-bug” MRSA, E. coli and Coliform bacteria were present on over 40% of surfaces tested.
